Virtual Memory has paved the way for later storage devices which are very small compared to early storage devices. The IBM 1311 is a massive storage device made in 1961. Since then storage devices have been made to be much smaller. Virtual memory made time sharing possible which is the sharing of a computing resource among many users by the means of multi-programming or multi- tasking. Virtual memory helped the later inventions grow smaller and be more efficient.
The 8 inch floppy disk was created in 1971 and was very small compared to earlier storage devices.
The 5 1/4 flexible disk drive was created in 1978 and was even smaller than before.
